PPH carried the Morse HS solidarity refusal on the front of the Coast and
State section, with a picture. 35 staff wore gloves and refused to be
printed in solidarity with those who are absolutely committed to refusal
(the others can still get printed later if circumstances require).
David Tiemann writes:
'We had a fair turnout -- 25 or so (PPH counted 35) for the
"walkout", probably 40 in all (elementary teachers came late).
For the demonstration we walked out of the building en masse with our gloves
on and David Ingmundson, a high school colleague, read a statement of
principle. We then returned to the building and gathered in the lobby area
where teachers signed a petition calling for repeal. Copies will be sent to
the Governor and the Legislature ... In addition
those present brainstormed a list of things that could be done to support
local youth, and people made donations to start a fund. Someone suggested
that the list be developed so that it could be published as "49 things to do
(to support kids) with $49!" I don't know how much was donated but we got a
phonecall tonight from someone here in Brunswick who saw the coverage and
wanted to donate as a way of showing support.
The media was there in force. TV channels 6, 8 13, and 51 (Fox) plus
the Ptld Press Herald and the Bath/Brunswick Times-Record. According to
people at school today all the stations ran stories last night, the papers
ran stories today. Oh, and MPBN radio covered it as well. I never think
reporters get the full story out there but it's one more step to keep it in
the public eye.'
