Letter From Anne Pavalkis

Thomaston Grammar School

Dear Senator Pingree,

I have been a teacher for 22 years and I am writing to you because I would
like the PL 110 law repealed. Having the State pay the $49.00 for the
finger printing and the backround check is an insult and an avoidance of
the larger issue of an invasion of privacy and a flagrant abuse of civil
rights. Who gets to read the backround checks? Do we each rceive a copy
to keep?

In l987, our family moved to Connecticut. I applied for a teaching
position in New Haven. I was required to have a Notary Public stamp
copies
of my birth certificate and other papers included in the application to
insure I was who I was. If a backround check and fingerprinting were part
of the application, I would have had the choice to apply or not.

In our district, SAD#50, 75-80% of the teachers are female. I question
whether female teachers are being singled out for a crime that they
statistically do not participate in.

Teachers in their last years before retirememt and others with many years
of experience have track records that speak for themselves!

Sincerely, Anne M. Pavalkis
